Discover New Hampton: The City of Expanding Horizons

Right in the heart of Chickasaw County, you’ll find New Hampton.
As the county seat, New Hampton has long been a hub for the communities around it. But spend a little time here and you’ll quickly realize it’s more than a place to run errands or pass through on the way somewhere else.
It’s a place where downtown shops are still locally owned, parks are busy with families, the trail runs right through town, and community events have a way of bringing everyone together.
Whether you're visiting for the afternoon, spending a weekend in Chickasaw County, or just looking for somewhere new to explore, here's a look at what makes New Hampton worth a stop.
Start Downtown

New Hampton’s downtown is the kind of place where you can park the car and actually take your time.
Main Street is home to locally owned shops, restaurants, bars and businesses, giving visitors plenty of reasons to wander instead of simply driving through. You’ll find everything from gifts and clothing to home goods and other finds you probably weren't looking for when you walked in.
And, of course, you’ll find plenty of places to grab something to eat. Mexican, Chinese, pizza & hometown favorites are just a few minutes away when your stomach starts to grumble.
That's one of the best things about New Hampton: you don't have to look very far to find a locally owned place to eat, shop or spend a little time.
Take a Step Back in Time
For a town its size, New Hampton has a surprising amount of history tucked into its downtown.

One of the most recognizable is the Carnegie Cultural Center, housed in New Hampton's former Carnegie Library. Built in 1910 with funding from Andrew Carnegie, the building now serves as a cultural center featuring local history, art, rotating exhibits and community programs.

It's the kind of place that gives you a better understanding of the people and stories that shaped Chickasaw County. And you don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it. Exhibits change, events happen throughout the year, and many of the programs are free.
Get Outside
If there's one thing New Hampton does really well, it's making it easy to get outside.
The city's parks cover more than 50 acres across six parks, each with something a little different to offer.

The biggest is Mikkelson Park, and calling it a park almost feels like underselling it.
It's home to the Wooden Wonderland playground, swimming pool and splash pad, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, sand volleyball, disc golf, a skate park, walking and fitness trails, picnic shelters and the city's campground. The historic bandshell is also located here and has been a gathering place for the community for decades.

Mikkelson Park is also the place to be when New Hampton knows how to celebrate. Each June, Heartland Days takes over the park for a full weekend of live music, food, family activities, games, entertainment and plenty of time spent with friends and neighbors. It’s one of those weekends that brings the whole community out and people back to their roots to attend a class reunion.

And then there's Little Light of Mine, when Mikkelson Park gets transformed into a Christmas light display around Thanksgiving and stays lit through December. It's become one of those traditions that people come back to year after year.

For something a little quieter, head to Garnant Park and Pond for fishing or a walk around the pond. Runion Park is home to the Kindness Square all-inclusive playground, while Randall Park and Sheakley Park each offer their own places to play, relax or gather.
Walk, Bike or Just Get Moving

The TRIBE Trail is another reason to explore New Hampton on foot or by bike. The paved trail stretches for nearly six miles through the community, connecting places like Mikkelson Park, the Chickasaw Wellness Complex and Garnant Pond along the way.
You don't have to be training for anything to enjoy it. Take a morning walk, bring the kids, get on your bike or just use the trail to get from one part of town to another. It's one of those amenities you might not think much about until you visit somewhere that doesn't have one.
Spend Some Time at the Water

Just outside of town, Airport Lake gives you another way to enjoy the outdoors.
The lake offers fishing, boating, swimming and camping, making it an easy place to turn a quick stop into an afternoon or even an overnight stay. The campground includes electrical and sewer hookups, a shower house, bathrooms, beach access and boat access.
It's also a good reminder that you don't have to travel far from town to find a little space to slow down.
Don't Forget to Eat
You can't talk about New Hampton without talking about food.
This is a town where you can still sit down for a plate of homemade-style breakfast, grab a tenderloin, meet friends for a drink or find something completely different depending on what you're craving.

Try a classic breakfast at Klunder's Kafe, stop downtown for Mexican or Chinese food, grab pizza, or make an evening of it at The Pub at the Pinicon or Poor Richards.

And if you're visiting on a nice day, don't be surprised if your meal turns into a longer stop. That's kind of how things work around here.
A Good Place to Start Exploring Chickasaw County
One of the best things about New Hampton is its location.
Sitting near the center of Chickasaw County, it's an easy starting point for exploring the rest of the county. From New Hampton, you can head toward the Little Brown Church in Nashua, grab a bite in Lawler, visit the shops and attractions in Fredericksburg, or take the scenic route through any of the county's smaller communities.
New Hampton gives you a place to eat, shop, stay and get your bearings before heading out to see what else Chickasaw County has to offer.
So, What Makes New Hampton Special?
Maybe it's the downtown.
Maybe it's the parks.
Maybe it's a summer evening at the bandshell, a walk along the TRIBE Trail, a morning at a Muscari or Sips on Main, or watching Mikkelson Park fill up during a community celebration.
It's probably a little bit of all of it.
New Hampton isn't trying to be something it's not. It's a community where people shop local, show up for events, take pride in their parks and still know their neighbors.
And if you’re looking for a place in Northeast Iowa where you can experience a little bit of everything that makes a small town special, New Hampton is a pretty good place to start.
